On June 23, 1991, the world of video games changed.

Game enthusiasts were no longer limited to one brick busting, pipe sliding, mushroom munching, Goomba stomping, Koopa shell-shocking, raccoon suit flying, green dinosaur riding, evil king dethroning, mustachioed & blue overall clad hero. On this day, television sets and arcades around the world were introduced to a new kind of terror: An obese yet ingenious man was hell bent on molding an entire planet into his own twisted vision of paradise: A mechanical "utopia"  with no signs of organic life. Acres of industrial superstructure. Grass & earth encased in soulless concrete and steel. A thousand automated factories, belching jet-black pollution into the rancid air as all living things, be they flora or fauna, be subjugated to robotic conversions by the will of this mad scientist.

All things, that is, but one.

On this day, a new hero would come to save more than just a princess.

One sole creature saw the selfishness to these ideals, the injustice it would be to those around the world and the destruction that would befall it if left unchecked. This being, with his cool demeanor, courageous optimism and unique sense of style,  took it upon himself to put a stop to the crazed doctor's plans by doing all that he knew that he could:

Run and run fast.

From his home he ran from looping Green Hills to shining Spring Yards through Marbled ruins, crumbling Labyrinths and across twinkling Star Light urban sprawls, rescuing all living creatures from their robotic nightmares along the way, to face the Scrap Brain-ed mechanized maniac in a Final effort. Defeated by what he once saw as nothing more than a rodent, the villain detonates his efforts of domination and flees his fortress, seemingly leaving the world free of the tyrant to live in peace with their new protector by their side...seemingly

Time and again the Doctor returned with even more mechanical horrors than ever before, all still geared towards the same motive of world domination...and, time and again, the ever persistent rodent continued to thwart his every plot, gaining helpful and loyal friends and rivals along the way. Throughout his travels he has seen many Zones of his own and several other worlds and now, 20 years later, as he begins this next Act, he's now forced to look back at every Adventure from every Level, every enemy Unleashed he's ever faced and come out of virtually unscathed in order to preserve and retain what it was that has made him the hero of Heroes that he is today and forever will be for Generations to come.

On June 23, 1991 the world learned who Sonic the Hedgehog was and on June 23, 2011 we remember who he's been, has become and will always be: The Blue Dude With the 'Tude Moving With the Quickness Since 1991. Happy 20th Anniversary Sonic the Hedgehog! Here's to you Doin' It To It 20 Years Long & Still Going Strong!

Edit: And the birthday surprises just keep on a ROLLING! Not ONLY is there going to a Sonic Generations demo made available to all PS3 & 360 owners, but there's something even bigger in store for the world's fastest video game character of all time come this November! Here's a hint: What goes up must come down, yet his feet won't touch the ground. --> www.sega.com/news/?n=5191
